Grandparents & Life Advice From Salma Hayek

Today, my Grandpa, or Gramps as I call him, turns a young 80 years old! This birthday comes on the heels of my Grandma’s 80th birthday; yes, she went for a younger guy, and no, we absolutely NEVER let her forget it. Married for almost 62 of those years, and retired for nearly 2 decades, these two are among the most youthful people, in spirit and heart, that I know.
While I could go on about how wonderful and generous and loving they are (not to mention absolutely hilarious), I won’t. Instead, I want to share some life advice I got from Salma Hayek (yes, things just got super random). No, I don’t know Salma Hayek, nor have I had the opportunity to meet her, but something she said in an interview years ago has always stuck with me. I don’t even recall the publication or news outlet, but I do remember what she said. The journalist basically asked her what her life advice was. And what did she say? She didn’t suggest wearing more sunscreen, or cleaning out your closet annually. Oh no, of all things, Hayek said that if you’re fortunate enough to have grandparents who are living, spend as much time with them, talking with them, even interviewing them, because those will be the most precious conversations you’ll ever have.
At the time I didn’t really fully get it. But, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come realize just how fortunate I am to be an adult and have grandparents who are living. It truly is a blessing that many people don’t ever have the opportunity to experience. Grandparents are full of history and stories, rich in knowledge and love, and in my experience, these are things they want to share. They’re just waiting to be asked.
All this said, I’m too young to give life advice. So, if you won’t take my advice, take Salma Hayek’s advice. If you have Grandparents, or pseudo-Grandparents, spend as much time with them as possible. Spending time with people you love is never a bad investment.
SIDENOTE: If you’re like me…take tons of pictures and even the occasional hidden video. My Grandma would probably lock me away if she could see some of the hilarious footage I have on her. Maybe someday…HAHA
80 years YOUNG!
 HILARIOUS …always.
Apples don’t fall far from the tree…
 My brothers graduation. Always LOL-ing.
